Why The iPhone?!
July 30, 2008 by Ryan Ray
Everyone all over the entire world knows of the elusive iPhone. Few have been lucky enough to touch one, let alone own the slick device. Count me as the proud papa of the iPhone 3G, but what is it that brings us to lust for this device? Could it be that it’s made by Apple, the world’s best computer/device company in the world? Perhaps it’s because it’s got a huge touch screen? Something we’ve never seen before on the our phones. What I want to know is, why is a device like this such a huge success all over the world? Well, let me tell you why I bought this phone, then it’s your turn to leave a comment and tell me why your got one, or why you didn’t get one….yet!
This begins with when I bought my first Mac, I bought a Mac Mini right when it came out. I was a sophomore in high school at the time. I had always wanted to get a Mac, just never had the money to really get a laptop like I wanted. College was coming up soon and I would be able to get my laptop then, so I went with the Mac Mini. Right away I was hooked. I comfortably switched OS’s in less than two days. I previously had built my own computer and I constantly had problems with the sound cards, not to mention three hard drive replacements after they failed twice on me. Each time it failed I lost my faith in ever having a beautiful computer that ran smoothly almost %100 of the time. The day finally came though, when I took the plunge with my Mac Mini. So that’s my very brief background of my foray into the Mac world. I mean my room mate still gives me crap for using my Macbook Pro, even after his Dell notebook has had a file system failure during the school year, and this summer his video card and motherboard have fried, haha. I still like him though.
I could be mistaken for what they call an “Apple Fanboy,” I do love their products, I just don’t worship them. Apple’s user interface design is what sealed the deal for me. Everything works smoothly, so when I heard the rumors they were coming out with a phone I was very excited. The first hint was with the ROCKR. It came out and I thought, ehh I’ll pass Apple, I know you can produce something better on your own. Good thing I did as that was a major flop. This is where Apple clearly saw they had to go do it themselves, and I’m so very glad they did. Skip forward to 2007 when the iPhone is announced. At first I’m crushed by the price tag, $500 for the cheapest model, but I devised a plan to get my own iPhone. During the time were we were all in limbo waiting for the iPhone to be launched, I started selling some of my old electronics on Ebay. I would be moving to a new college soon and couldn’t take these things with me. My plan was to hopefully make enough money from these “toys” to buy the iPhone once it was out. I had a Palm Treo while I worked that summer. It was the ugliest and bulkiest phone I ever had, and a data plan started at $40 a month for it.
The iPhone launch day came and went and I had yet to reach my goal of $500 dollars, a little disheartened I watched everyone enjoy their new iPhones while I sulked with my Treo. Soon enough though I had saved my money and started my hunt for my very own iPhone. It took me about two weeks for the nearest AT&T store to finally have a 4GB in stock. I rushed out and bought it ASAP! I probably had a heart attack as I was finally in my car heading home. I didn’t care though, in my passenger seat was MY iPhone. After getting home and setting it up I was hooked on this smartphone. It did everything I could ever imagine. Internet, email, text messaging, weather, everything in very elegant ways. Something we weren’t used to seeing on a phone. It truly has changed the mobile phone market. Every new phone that comes out now has a touch screen and that candy bar shape, mimicking the iPhone with no questions asked. They do say that copying is the sincerest form of flattery. So why is it that the iPhone is my weapon of choice?
I know the iPhone’s core features are on every other smart phone out there. They all have email, a calendar, and a browser but none do it like the iPhone does, this truly is the reason why the iPhone rules the roost. My contacts, emails accounts and calendar are quickly synced up to my iPhone. I don’t have push but I use IMAP on all my accounts it keeps my inbox in sync between my phone and computer. The contacts are organized and it’s very easy to call a friend up and chat away. My iCal is there with reminders so I don’t forget to do things even if I’m away from my computer. It is my digital life wrapped and organized in a beautiful interface. This is why I keep using my iPhone everyday. No other smart phone matches the ease of use, nor beauty of the iPhone. You know they say the Mac makes it fun to use a computer, well it’s the same for the iPhone. It’s fun to use the iPhone, and why wouldn’t you want a phone that is powerful yet a joy to use. I wouldn’t survive on my own without my dear iPhone helping me out all the way. I couldn’t use any other phone after becoming spoiled with this one. There are plenty of MORE reasons I use an iPhone, but what are yours? Tell me why you like the iPhone, or why you hate it. Just tell me something!
