What The iPhone Needs; Waterproof Sealing
August 24, 2009 by Ryan Ray
Welcome back to what I like to call wishful thinking, otherwise known as What The iPhone Needs. My own little, sort of, column where I can dream and complain about what I think the iPhone needs. It’s been awhile since I’ve done one of these, and since today I’m on the road moving back to school I thought it was about time to just vent.
What does the iPhone need you may ask, it’s perfect in every way. Yes, that’s an almost factual statement but anything can always be made better. There is always room for improvement. One thing I noticed the iPhone is missing is making it completely waterproof. How about next summer when apple updates the iPhone they call it iPhone 3G S W… No, alright just a thought. Obviously the W stands for waterproof.
If they really had a waterproof iPhone then what possibilities could open up with that freedom? In the summer I’m around a lot of water, at camps, going to the lake, kayaking, fishing from the peddle boat. Pretty much around water for the majority of the summer. Now, I’m very careful with my iPhone. I’m not jumping into lakes fully clothed and just hoping my iPhone survives. I take care of my little phone. But if I could take my iPhone underwater, I would be all over that.

This summer the iPhone 3G S got a great camera put in it, and it can also record video. Imagine taking that to the Bahamas or Florida Keys
I’d love to be snorkling and pictures underwater. Perhaps swimming with dolphins and taking video of them leaping from underwater. There’s just not a lot of underwater cinematography around. I think it would explode if the iPhone became waterproof. Especially since the iPhone is the most used camera on Flickr’s stats. If you look around getting a waterproof case for your normal camera is really expensive. At least just for a dSLR it was around $700, that’s much more than my camera body cost! To shoot professionally underwater would be cool, but I’ll gladly take a waterproof iPhone.
The video below is one I saw up on digg a few weeks ago, and this was what sparked the idea. This guy had just got his iPhone 3G S and was recording video poolside. Just enjoying the summer and the weather, then splash. The iPhone and it’s darn slippery case went sinking to the bottom of the pool still recording video. The great thing is that the iPhone survived, at least enough to be able to get the video off and show everyone. At first everyone was crying fake, fake, but I think this video is the real deal. Somehow, luckily, the iPhone did short out and it was actually waterproof. I’m sure there is just a little magic Apple could work and make the next iPhone completely sealed and waterproof. At least then no one could complain about the battery being sealed in. It’d have to be for sure with a waterproof phone.
What do you think about a waterproof iPhone, stupid or not? Let me know by leaving a comment. I want to know your opinion. Thanks for reading, now check out this video!

Nice article. And, yes, if cheap watches can be watersealed, why can’t iPhone also be?
I would vote for this iPhone 3GS W ! Maybe with some support from iPhone community we’ll get it.
Hey Radu,
Thanks so much for the comment. I agree, it may be hard to push for waterproof sealing to Apple but it can be done! Even better yet, someone start a 3rd party business that does it! Good opportunity there!
Come back soon Radu
