Watch Live TV With Ustream

April 1, 2009 by Ryan Ray

Ustream, this application and the following website have been around for just a short while, but apparently they both are good enough to be used by millions of people. Even Barack Obama’s media team used ustream to broadcast his speeches across the campaign trail. Thanks to that is how I found out about ustream. Ustream started as just a website where people could sign up, then with any kind of camera stream their lives across the internet. Think of it as a LIVE YouTube. As LIVE tv is going on on ustream, the viewers can even login and chat with each other and the broadcaster.

Let’s talk about the interface for a little bit before I give you my two cents on the app. As you can see in my first screen shot you are greeted with their logo while the app loads up. Once launched you see a very clean and simple interface. Ustream displays all of the live shows first, and from there you can pick either the featured or popular ones. There is a difference in shows, I checked to make sure they weren’t the same. Featured does not equal popular in this case. Simply tap on the show to connect and start viewing it, simple really.

There are three sections on the bottom to choose from. The first one we talked about which was a list of the current live shows on ustream. The second is a list of upcoming live shows. You again have a featured section to choose from, as well as this time a list of all events. The date and time when the show goes live is clearly indicated, making it very easy to not miss your show.

Lastly there is the archived section of the app. This simply lists all of the past shows. Ustream not only streams live shows, but also records them for later viewing. One of the things I’ve taken advantage of when trying to watch one of Obama’s speeches. It as well is split between a featured and popular listing in the archived section. It also shows you some stats for the video. How many views and when it was recorded.

Sadly there is not a search section in the iPhone app. Something that should be implemented before anything else in my opinion. There is though on the full site. In my experience the app is pretty solid. On wifi I never ran into issues, but I did over EDGE. It wouldn’t connect to Leo Laporte’s show but did let me watch the puppy cam…there were no puppies in sight.

Ustream may be relatively unheard of, but it’s an up and coming fun internet site, and the iPhone app does well to compliment the site. Many celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Jonathen Davis of Korn, Chris Botti the trumpet player, and many news organizations broadcast live over ustream. It’s a great way to interact with people live. Also as a sidenote if you wanted to have a live tv show, then this is the way to do it. Head over to to check it out.

If you have the most updated firmware on your iPhone you can go to the app store in either iTunes or on your iPhone and search for USTREAM. You can then download the app for free!

I have my own show that I broadcast live, but it I can’t watch it on iPhone. It searches only most popular shows. What’s up whith that?

I’m not sure Igor, I complained about this too. I hope they update it and let the app search EVERY live show. Thanks for the comment, do come back soon!

i have the same problem. there is a specific broadcast on there that my friend is putting out and i can see it online but i can’t bring it up on the app. there’s no way to search for it except in the “featured” or “popular” sections and it is neither. how does a broadcast become “featured”?

I know, I wish there was a way to search all broadcasted shows. As far as I know your show just has to have a lot of viewers or get lucky to get featured. Sorry I don’t have more tips. Hopefully the app is updated with expanded search
