TweetDeck is Crowned Twitter Champion on the iPhone

June 18, 2009 by Ryan Ray

Once again there is a new Twitter app out for the iPhone. If you are unaware that Twitter and the iPhone pretty much are married, and go perfect together. There are so many Twitter apps flooding the app store that it’s often hard to pick one and say it covers everything you want it to. At least for me that was the case. I remember at one time having three twitter apps to cover all of my bases. Even many of the apps I have that aren’t twitter have some kind of tie in to twitter itself. For example the AP Mobile News app let’s you share stuff through Twitter. It’s becoming insane, and honestly I love it. Twitter has shown quite a few uses for itself.

This Twitter app is different though, it goes by the name TweetDeck and if you’ve been living in the dark, as far as Twitter goes, then you’ll need to know that TweetDeck is one of the most popular desktop clients for Twitter. TweetDeck is both a powerful tool to manage your twitter accounts, and is cross platform compatible because it runs on Adobe Air. I’ve been using TweetDeck for awhile now and each new release keeps getting better and better. The thing that seperates TweetDeck from the others is the ability to organize your tweets. They do this by having columns. For instance I have 5 columns I think. All Friends, Mentions, Groups, DM, & Favorites. In that order too since you can organize them. If you’ve used TweetDeck before hopefully you know how great it is. Now take that experience and put it on the iPhone. How much would you pay for that? Well I’ve bought Twitter apps before for $5, so I’d pay it again for a TweetDeck app. The good news is that this great app is free. Just search TweetDeck or check out the top of the free apps because it’s sure to be there and download it now.

I might be calling it earlier, but TweetDeck is the Twitter iPhone App Champion in my book. Why, might you ask? Well let’s talk about how this app works and soon you will be convinced to use it both on the desktop and iPhone. First the interface is wonderful on the iPhone, and it’s not too shabby on it’s desktop app. Everything is clear and easy to get to, and it works like you would expect it. Here’s what the home screen looks like. You can swipe through your columns to pick one out. Once you’ve got one you want tap on it to make it full screen and interact with it.

You can easily add a column as well. The center button that says, “Add Column” tap that and get to adding. Separating your twitter feed like this will increase your productivity on Twitter. As you can see below I am adding a user group. But here is the greatest secret about TweetDeck on the iPhone. It syncs with your desktop app! Simply sign up for a free TweetDeck account and sync away. As you can see I want to add the user group I have on my Desktop app so I can hit the “Get From Server” button to sync that column to my iPhone. It’s great to finally have the desktop and iPhone synced together like this.

TweetDeck Add Column

Like I said you can move and organize your columns just like you do iPhone apps. Tap and hold until they start wiggling and drag them to rearrange the order. There’s a lot of functionality built in like this that makes the app great.

Lastly a shot of the settings. You can add multiple twitter accounts as you’ll see in the video. And you can login with your new TweetDeck account. Also you can mess with the settings such as which image upload service to use, I’d stay with Twitpic if I were you.

As I mentioned before I’m so excited and happy about this app. I’ve been using TweetDeck for a long time on my desktop, and then using Twitterriffic on my iPhone. Twitterriffic is still great, and I’m sure they’ll add this syncing ability but like I said TweetDeck takes the cake for this one. I’ve made a short video to help illustrate how smooth this app is so please watch and enjoy when the video is up. Leave a comment and let me know what you think about TweetDeck. Thanks for watching and reading.
