Top 5 of 25 : Discovery Channel App

August 30, 2009 by Ryan Ray

Happy Sunday to everyone, hope all is well in your world. I’ll be starting my senior year of college tomorrow, excited and definitely not ready for class. Hopefully they don’t keep me as busy as last year. That was rough. Anyway, just wanted to check in with everyone. Today we’ll be hitting the second app in this short series called “The Top 5 of The Top 25 Free Apps” This app was sitting in the second spot when I recorded and edited the video that goes a long with this, but now that I checked it’s dropped to third place in the app store. Not a big deal, just hopefully it doesn’t drop much quicker!

This app is made by the great people over at the Discovery Channel. The app is made very well and obviously it’s free since I’m just reviewing the free ones for right now. And really the whole purpose of this app is to show you great clips of their great TV shows and then get you hooked on them. If you are already hooked then you can now just get your fix wherever you are at. There are a ton of the newest clips online, then you can see their air times, and finally of course buy the season or episodes from iTunes.

Discovery Channel Loading Screen

Here is the first thing you see when opening the app. A big and blue Discovery logo. I kind of like their new logo, the D with the globe  covering some of it up. What do you think? Below are some screenshots of actually using the app.

Discovery Channel Clip Lists Discovery Channel Show Air Times

The first one you see here are the actual clips you can watch. Obviously they don’t put the whole show online, but you can watch little clips from each show. A lot of Man vs. Wild had just been posted when I took some screen shots. The next one shows you the air times of their most popular shows. In case you were ever wondering when the next episode comes on, you’ve got it right there. Some other noteworthy things that I didn’t take screenshots of are the news section and most viewed. The news section provides video clips of what seems to be a lot of environmental tech news. Anything about discovery right? They have some great clips on there. Then under the most viewed you can see the clips that other users have watched the most. Pretty cool to be able to see what’s the most popular.

Discovery Channel Video Controls

These two shots are of the actual video performance. I was on a Wifi network when testing this and it worked beautifully. The first shot of the loading screen was only there for a few seconds then the video started playing. Now there are ads at the start of some videos, so you’ll have to sit through those. The next shot is the video controls over some actual playing video. That’s why it’s a little blurry. The controls are all to familiar for iPhone users as they closely resemble the normal quicktime controls. You can see more info and share the clip by email, or browse other clips from the show.

All in all this is a great app for anyone who loves the Discovery Channel and wants to be watching their shows all of the time. Of course you probably already have them in your iTunes and DVR, still though this is a fun app and deserves to be in the top 5. Check it out for yourself, then enjoy the video review below. Thanks so much for reading.
