The iPhone Video & My Thoughts

There are some crazy rumors starting to swirl, no wait not swirl, FLY around like crazy. It of course is par for the course since WWDC is less than two days away. But one thing that I’ve noticed hasn’t grabbed that many headlines is the rumor about the new iPhone being called the iPhone Video. I have been wondering what Apple is going to call the new iPhone since we have the original and plain old iPhone, then we have the new and improved iPhone 3G, but what about the next gen. What will this version of the iPhone be called? It would make sense that Apple would just continue to call it the iPhone 3G, and maybe add some moniker like V2. Once I read about the iPhone Video name though it makes a little more sense as what their naming scheme may be.
Apparently there are quite a few new SKU’s or something similar to that showing up in retailers systems. Up to 5 in some systems these range from the black and white 16GB to the black and white 32GB then one that has no size listed. Here is a shot from the Dutch T-Mobile system.

As you can see like I said there are the 4 versions of the iPhone 2009 in two new capacity sizes. A much welcomed change especially if they will be recording video! but there is one listed as NTB. I don’t know what NTB is but this might be the iPhone Video. It also could some sort of tablet but probably not since it’s named iPhone 2009. So what would set apart the iPhone Video if this really was what the NTB turns out to be? Obviously it will have the abillity to record video and hopefully upload it to site like YouTube,Vimeo,Blip, etc.. At the very least YouTube given Apple’s relationship with them. What about this though, if the iPhone Video means that it’s the iPhone that does Video Chat? It seems pretty logical to not only call the iPhone that has video recording the iPhone Video, but if it has video chat it just adds another feature to set it apart.
Personally I can’t see the Apple I know having four regular iPhones then one iPhone that can do video recording and video chat, but also I can see Apple doing that at the same time. I still sit on the fence a little bit because I believe the NTB is some kind of error, or smaller and cheaper iPhone. I think all of the new iPhones will be getting video recording and video chatting, if one get’s it it’s only fair that they all get those features. I’ve been wrong plenty and plenty of times, but that’s just my gut instinct. Apple won’t seperate their iPhone lines by features, but as usual by storage capacities and color. As example just look at the old iPhone 3G, there were only 3 versions of it. A black 8GB a black 16GB and white 16GB, so why does the T-Mobile site list 5 iPhone 3G’s?
Like I said there could be a special iPhone Video, but I believe this is the actual name for the new iPhone not some special class of iPhones. The next gen iPhone will be known as the iPhone Video because it will have video recording and video chat. I’m very excited as this seems the most likely case and it’s going to be awesome. Of course I want to know what you think about this? is the iPhone Video the name for ALL the new iPhones or is it a new special class of iPhones? We’ll definitely find out on Monday. As always thank you for reading and discussing with me.

It had better be announced tomorrow (I’ve heard there’s a chance they wouldn’t?), and it had better be worth the wait (I’ve been hanging on to my BB for 8 months for this).
I think all of the models will have video, including a front-mounted camera, we’ll just see a range in capacity. 4GB through 32GB, from the various rumor roundups I’ve read.
I sure hope there is a video chat capable iPhone, but I won’t be all that disappointed if there isn’t. As long as the newest iPhone is better overall than the last version, I’ll be more than satisfied. Sure I like surprises as most people do, but I also know how to face reality. OLED displays and graphics processors will eventually come, but Apple has profit margins to make and supply chains to fill with parts that are readily available in quantity.
Video chat sounds cool but is it really necessary? Can the current 3G network actually handle that sort of traffic. It could be made to work only on a WiFi connection or if the iPhone has a fast enough processor, to compress the stream before going over a 3G network. If it doesn’t work well, then Apple shouldn’t bother having it. I don’t think the carrier infrastructure is there to properly do video chat.
Anyway, if Steve gets up on stage just to say hello and he’s doing well, that will certainly make my day. That alone should boost Apple’s share price and help sell the iPhone. A low cost iPhone with a low-cost plan will do the rest.
I’ve also heard of that chance, but if there is no iPhone in 2 hours it will be a catastrophe. It was never confirmed but their track record says today is the day. We’ll see though, are you able to keep up with all of the live coverage?
I hope so as well. If there is no video chat, then at least give us video recording right? Then some kind of app could be made to use the video camera to allow us to video chat through a 3rd party app. Thanks for the comment!
