Flickr Gets Up To Bat With The iPhone
October 3, 2008 by Ryan Ray
FINALLY!! I’ve been waiting for this for soo long. I knew a day would come when Flickr would get it’s act together and make friends with the iPhone. I’m just one of the avid users of Flickr, if you couldn’t tell from my excitement, among the millions of other people who love Flickr so dearly. So with that said Flickr and/or iPhone users can rejoice! It’s a day where the birds are chirping and all is right in the world. Flickr has released a mobile version of their site that is optimized for the iPhone. Using AJAX they’ve released a very slick version of Flickr, it follows the lead of the Facebook mobile site which isn’t a bad thing. Simply point your iPhone browser over to http://m.flickr.com and log in! Once logged in you’ll be greeted with a familiar interface. A wonderful tabbed sort of browsing experience, as you can tell by this wonderful picture below from wired.com
If you’ve never used Flickr, or even yet…NEVER HEARD OF FLICKR. Then I highly recommend checking out this awesome photo hosting site. It’s so good that I even pay them for the ability to host my pictures there. Flickr also has a great community based around it’s services. Communites based around design, based around typography, photography, etc… If you’ve ever wanted to learn anything about those topics and more definitely get over to Flickr.com and check it out.
Anyway back to the main issue at hand, the iPhone Flickr site! You can do just about everything on the mobile site as normal, of course except for the things that require flash. On the main Flickr site you can edit and organize your photos using a flash browser but on the iPhone that feature is stripped out. The feature is missing for good reason though. Despite requiring a whole rewrite of their flash version, the iPhone really isn’t the device to edit and organize your photos with. Even though the screen is huge and perfect for other tasks, it’d just be a pain in the butt to try and work on the iPhone’s screen. That’s what dual 32″ monitors are for anyway, not the iPhone’s 3 inch one.
The mobile version of Flickr is a joy to use. I’ve been using it on Wifi and it works like a charm. It’s quick and “snappy,” not at all sluggish. The interface is clean and easy to navigate. My favorite part of the interface is at the home screen going to “Today’s Interestingness.” This just grabs all of the latest pictures uploaded, and all of them are incredibly good. I’m always blown away by the photos that others take. Their point of view and visions are amazing. This is a great way to find that inspiration or show it off to friends on the go. It’s just too bad you can’t upload photos from their website. There are Flickr apps in the app store that do that, so we’ll talk about those later.
All in all, Flickr got it right. This website is great to navigate and use on the iPhone. I’ve been waiting for a long time for this. Before this you had to do a lot of pinching and zooming to get around the original Flickr site. I’m glad that’s now a thing of the past. So now you weigh in on the site, have you ever used Flickr before? What do you think about Flickr finally getting into the iPhone and mobile world? Don’t just read this and not comment about it, I might call you lazy!
Thanks for reading!
