The iPhone 3GS; The S Stands For Speed
June 9, 2009 by Ryan Ray
Well it’s all over and we’re still here digesting the WWDC announcements. I was thouroughly impressed with what Apple brought to the table today. The new Macbook Pro’s are rocking, perhaps I’ll be picking up the new Macbook Pro 13″ and letting my dear mother upgrade into the worlf of Intel Macs
. The better screen, SD card slot, and upgraded specs are great! But how about the iPhone 3GS, where you a little let down too? I was slightly let down, but only from the lack of exterior design changes. It looks like the old iPhone 3G, haha. How will anyone know that I have a brand new iPhone 3GS if it looks the same?
Even if the new iPhone feature wise was a little underwhelming, it’s new additions have made it worthy in my book for an upgrade. Speed is always something I appreciate, and the media functions are right up my ally. It’s going to be a great update combining faster 3G with a faster iPhone that allows more media to be captured and even edited! Yup you can edit video on the iPhone, just imagine some of the apps that are looming in the future for that! With that said, let’s roundup the actual features of the iPhone 3GS; Thanks to Gizmodo for the quick roundup

Speed
Faster than the previous generation: Launching messages is 2.1 faster, load the NY Times in Safari: 2.9 times faster.Camera
New camera, with auto focus, auto exposure, and auto white balance.
You can also tap to focus, changing white balance in the process.
Special macro and low light modes.
It supports video, 30 frames per second VGA with auto focus, auto white balance, and auto exposure.
Can trim video with a tap of the finger, and share it with MMS, email, MobileMe and YouTube.Connectivity
It supports the 7.2 Mbps HSDPA standard.Graphics
Includes hardware to support the OpenGL|ES standard, for faster and more complicated 3D games.Design
Same design as before.
Greener materials: Arsenic-free glass, BDF-free, Mercury-free LCD.Special Features
It has a compass application, which works with the included magnetometer. It’s integrated into the new maps, showing orientation, alongside longitude and latitude.
Voice control. You can now talk with your iPhone, Enterprise-style. You can instruct it to play similar songs to the one you are playing, or call people.
Nike + support built in.
Supports accessibility features, like zooming on text, inverting video, and voice over when you touch whatever text is on screen.
Besides those features the battery life has been increased, and the price remains the same. $199 for the 16GB and $299 for the 32GB. If you want to upgrade from the prevous iPhone 3G it will cost you $200 more dollars, so $499 and $599 for the iPhone 3GS. Something that AT&T is really screwing it’s loyal iPhone owners over on this, I’m not very happy about but will try to remain optimistic. If you remember last year during the new iPhone 3G launch the upgrade was available to all previous iPhone 3G owners, but we’ll see what happens with that. If the internet makes a big enough fuss perhaps we can get our way. Also maybe AT&T should really hurry up and get with the Tethering and the MMS show.
All in all a great day for Apple and Apple lovers, bad day for AT&T. Apple has shown they aren’t waiting around for AT&T anymore and looking to the future with the iPhone 3GS. So now it’s your turn, what do you think about the new iPhone 3GS? Love or hate it? I’ll give you my final verdict in the coming days. Thanks for reading!
