Photos On The iPhone – Mill Colour

August 10, 2009 by Ryan Ray

Here comes the second to last photo app on the iPhone. Again I thank you for your amazing patience as I get through this series. I decided to do this app second to last, and especially after CameraBag because they are very similar. The app is called Mill Colour, I’m not sure why but it does do color well. Mill Colour is one of the apps that I had never heard of personally, it wasn’t until one of my friends Todd Liles showed me the app. Of course being the photo lover that I am, I went right into the app store, searched and downloaded the app. The GREAT thing about this app is that it will costs you nothing and of course give you great results.

Like I mentioned above Mill Colour is a very similar app to CameraBag, it offers a lot of preset effects to manipulate the color of your photo. I believe Mill Colour even goes one step further and offers custom adjustments to the presets your choose. So let’s check out the inner workings of this app.

Mill Colour Main Screen

Here is a screenshot of the main loading screen. Nothing to see really, interesting logo, it looks good so far right?

Next you will be greeted with this menu. As I’ve said in almost every photo app my workflow usually starts by taking a photo with the regular camera app. I then take it through a series of apps in order of what adjustments I want to do on them. Below is the shot I took actually using the app for demonstration purposes.

I then snapped this picture once the app loaded with the built in camera. I do this to start with a fresh image so you can see the full effect of the apps presets, and not get any other editing mixed in with what this app does. Yes I do still have stars on my ceiling in my bedroom. It may be a childhood thing I’ll never get over. :) To add presets with Mill Colour tap on Looks and get started!

Alright here is one effect called Promo, as you can plainly see. My guess is that you can take a shot of yourself in the mirror. Don’t make it a myspace shot, but then apply this effect and call it an album color. The effect applies some pretty cool curves and color adjustments. I like the effect.

Mill Colour Adjustments

I mentioned that the effects are pretty similar to CameraBag, except that Mill Colour takes it one step further. Once you’ve got your preset chosen you can then edit the picture even further by tweaking things like Gamma and the Saturation. This was an extra to me as I often like to easily use a preset and call it good, or tweak that setting just a bit to get my own custom effect. This gives it a leg up on CameraBag in that sense.

The last two pictures are of two of my other favorite presets. My particular favorite is the Cross-Processed effect. Instant is always a classic as well. Surprisingly Mill Colour is a very complex app that offers many more possibilities than others that are similar to it. You must either know a little about what you are doing, or just twist knobs until you get lucky. I highly recommend you download Mill Colour and experiment. That’s the best way to learn and have fun, just try things out. You have no excuse since it’s a free app.

As always I’m ever grateful to you for reading. Let me know what you think by leaving me a comment.
