Photos On The iPhone – CameraBag

August 6, 2009 by Ryan Ray

Sadly and gladly for some or all of us this is the third to last photo app review in this goofy series I wanted to do. I think for the most part this is interesting. I love to use my iPhone to take pictures, actually I just love pictures. When I don’t have my dSLR with me then my iPhone 3G S does a great job, given that there is enough lighting. I’m doing this app now because it’s one of the last apps I use to spruce up any photos I’ve taken. Once I’ve got exposure and contrast fixed, cropped and enhanced, put it through curves adjustments, then it’s time to see if any of these effects look nice on the shot.

This app goes by the name CameraBag and it’s not a free one, sorry. If you are like me though you will definitely love the app, making the $3 bucks spent on it worth it. C’mon it’s just $3… cheapskate. If you have looked below already then you know what CameraBag does for you. It tires to emulate what another camera would look like if you could use it. Basically this app makes it seem like you carry a lot of cameras around in a bag, haha get it? Open the app and either take a shot from within the app as I have done below, or open a previously edited picture. Like I said I’m usually opening a picture that’s been through a few other apps.

Here is where the experimenting and fun begin. As you can see those are your choices of camera effects to choose from. Helga, Magazine, Mono, Lolo, and Cinema just to name a few. Just select them and experiment to see what each one does. Some of my personal favorites are of course the Helga, Instant, Magazine, and sometimes the 1974. There is just something about vintage that makes me feel fuzzy, no matter if it’s guitar amps or photo effects.

Below you can see a lot of the effects on the same image I took earlier using the built in camera option. I wanted to give you a shot without any editing done to it, purely just what CameraBag’s effects look like applied to the picture.

Cinema simply zooms and crops your image to make it fit into a 16:9 aspect ratio. It also puts black bars over the top and bottom of the image. This all adds to the effect of making it look like it was shot for a movie.

The magazine effect really adds a lot of contrast and warmth. It tries to emulate what the picture would turn out as a printed piece.

One of my favorite camera effects ever. Helga cameras are a real camera just incase you didn’t know. They produce these images that are highly vignetted and aren’t quite as vibrant in color as a normal camera. It’s a beautiful effect I’ve come to love.

Those are just a sample of some of my favorite effects. You should really splurge and get this app because it’s one of my favorites, right next to curves that is. I probably use those two apps the most. Let me know what you think by leaving a comment. Again sorry if you hate the photo series, but I’ve got two more apps to go and we’ll be back to normal. By next week I’ll be making some videos and posts about everything but photo apps. As always thanks for reading and thanks for the patience.
