MobileChat: The Ups and Downs of Launch Day

August 13, 2008 by Erik MacKinnon

Twenty08’s MobileChat – the newest somewhat full featured IM application to hit the App Store – dropped today, and initial response was good. So good, in fact, that the initial blast of users was enough to completely annihilate Twenty08’s server farm and drop the entire service.

From Twenty08’s official blog:

This is great news for our users and TERRIBLE news for us. While we’re excited that it’s on AppStore. We had no idea that the push behind MobileChat was so big! Our server load is going through the roof as I write this email and we’re quickly beginning to feel the heat.

With that being said, I just want all of our users to know that we are a very SMALL company. (There’s really only 2 of us!) As a result, we’re struggling to keep up with the demand and scale as we need. (This is a good problem.)

Users that tried to login after they purchased the application for $2.99 (including oh say… the reviewer writing this post) were greeted with the following screen:

According to their blog, they should be up and down throughout the night as they bring new servers online, and the app is saying “by 8AM EST.” So, don’t hold your breath on this thing coming back up until morning North America time.

Looking forward to a review to see if you should be spending your $2.99? We’ll have one up tomorrow provided Twenty08 can get things running by then.
