Lose Weight On Your iPhone

February 23, 2009 by Ryan Ray

If you are anything like me, which could be a good thing I guess, then you are very interested in your own personal health and well being. I know that I am a big nerd, I think technology is great, and usually us nerds don’t get out much. Instead we live through the internet. Well I must be a different breed because I do love the outdoors and I love to get exercise. I play a lot of ultimate frisbee, not to mention drumming for countless hours. It’s all a good workout. Did you know drumming boosts the strength of your immune system? It has to do something with the repetitive movements, don’t ask me how I was just told so. I’ve even recently started getting into running on a regular basis. At least as regular as I can manage being a full time student and all. My health is important to me and I’m sure it’s important to my friends and family.

With that said I’ve come across one of my favorite apps on the iPhone that will help you keep track of your weight. It’s a beautiful app named Lose It! and it’s FREE. That’s always a plus to me, haha. After you download Lose It! you’ll be greeted with a screen that helps you setup your weight loss plan. Of course you’ll enter information such as your age, height, current weight, etc… Then you’ll come to the part where you can pick how much weight you want to lost each week. Right now I am set on losing 1.5 lbs a week. Your max is two pounds a week, anything above can be deemed unhealthy! Once you are setup you are ready to start keeping track of your food intake and exercise for each day.

To do so you have to input what you’ve eaten for the day, and while Lose It! has a vast library of foods it doesn’t have everything. It’s near the edge of impossible to have everything, but you can enter custom foods. So you can easily create a custom food it doesn’t have in it’s library. A lot of fast food restaurants are included as well, we try and stay away from those though. It has four categories inside of that 3 of which are Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner. It helps to break down your calorie intake for each meal, which in turn helps me plan for the next meal I eat. So if I’m running a bit high I know not to get much food. The fourth category is for snacks. Snacks is another one of those things I try and stay away from, but there are times when I have a yogurt or some peanut butter late at night so those go in the snacks category.

Below are some screenshots of the interface, the interface is half of what makes this app so much fun and easy to use. Without it’s beautiful display of my stats I wouldn’t be half as motivated to watch my food intake. It might just be that I love interfaces though. That’s the nerd coming out in me.

This app is wonderful and like I said one of my favorite ones I’ve come across, especially for weight loss and calorie counting. There may be better apps for this out there but I bet those ones cost money. Perhaps I’ll look into those for an ultimate show down between the weight loss apps, until then I highly recommend Lose It! What are your thoughts on weight loss, and how about tracking it through your iPhone? Thanks for reading!
