iTunes & iPhone 2.2 First Reviews

November 21, 2008 by Ryan Ray

What a wonderful surprise to wake up to on a Friday. If you are as unaware as I was then listen up! Apple has released an update to iTunes bringing it to 8.0.2 last night. Also they then released the new iPhone 2.2 software shortly after midnight. Sadly for myself, and I’m sure many other students, I was busy working and doing homework. Luckily when I checked my Twitter updates this morning I read all of the people tweeting about the updates. For iTunes here are what they list as fixes;

iTunes 8.0.2 improves stability and performance and provides a number of important bug fixes, including:

- Addresses a quality issue creating MP3s on some computers.
- Fixes a connectivity issue with the iTunes Store when using some Internet proxies with Mac OS X.
- Improves accessibility with VoiceOver.

Well I can say I’ve never had any of these problems, but apparently if a fix is needed enough users were suffering these annoyances. Atleast I should benefit from some stability and performance…hopefully! Apple should just really re-write iTunes out of that old dusty code. Anyway let’s get onto the iPhone. The real star of this website. We’ve all been waiting for this new software for some weeks now, and boy does it pack some goodies within itself. Here are those listed fixes;

Enhancements to Maps
- Google Street View
- public transit and walking diretions
- display address of dropped pins
- share location via email
Enhancements to Mail
- resolved isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email
- improved formatting of wide HTML email
Improved stability and performance of Safari
Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular)
Decrease in call set-up failures and call drops
Improved sound quality of visual voicemail messages
Pressing the Home button from any Home screen takes you to the first Home screen
Preferences to turn on/off auto-correction in Keyboard settings

That’s quite a bit of updating If I can say so. Can I? Ok, so you want my first impression right? Well my iPhone was neither unlocked nor jailbroken. I’m a goody goody and follow Apples orders… :) . The update went flawlessly albeit it does take a little bit and renders your iTunes useless. As in you can’t do anything with iTunes except watch your iPhone be updated. Slightly annoying but let tell you now, THIS UPDATE IS WORTH IT. I know we haven’t received our push notification system. I kind of wonder if Apple completely forgot that they had promised us that. That promise was supposed to happen in September, but now it’s November :’( Im still a little sore about that if you couldn’t tell.

The iPhone itself appears to perform much quicker than before. I know everytime Apple issues an update it appears “snappier” but I’m not lying about this one. Everything loads faster, every app, setting, etc… I really like that part of the update. My second favorite part is the new street view in Google Maps. If you’ve updated and can’t figure out how to activate it simply follow me…

1. Open Google Maps
2. Drop a pin by tapping the bottom right curled page icon.
3. Tap drop pin
4. Tap the red guy, and MAGIC, Street View.

If you can’t tap the red guy that simply means there is no Street View where your pin is. Just try moving it and seeing if there is Street View there. Of course you have to be near a street for it to work so keep that in mind. My third and last new update they added is the home button taking you back to the first homescreen from any homescreen. With that update added I’m putting all my favorite apps on my homescreen. Then if I need to get to them quickly from say the 5th homescreen, I just tap the home button and I’m there.

That pretty well covers my first hands on experience with the new software, IT ROCKS! I’ve experienced no problems at all so far. I’d hope you’d be rushing home from work or class to get this bad boy installed. Let me know if you have any questions about updating, also let me know how your upgrade goes. Happy Friday to everyone.
