iStat Coming To Your iPhone
January 17, 2009 by Ryan Ray
Here’s an exciting development that I’ve heard of lately. Apparently the word on the street is that iStat is coming to the iPhone. I’m sure most of us know what iStat is, I’m running the widget currently in my dashboard. iStat is made by iSlayer, which is really a company called Bjango. iStat displays the status of your CPU and RAM in graphs, and also shows how much space is taken up/free on your hard drives. I’ve got mine to even show how much battery life is left in both my laptop battery and in my Mighty Mouse. It even displays the speed of the fans in my computer and the temperature at certain parts of the computer. For instance my fans are spinning at 2001 RPM, and my CPU is at 133 degrees. Thanks to iStat I can easily see what’s going on on the inside of my laptop.
With that being made clear, imagine when iStat comes to the iPhone and what it’s going to do. Perhaps we can get some more inside information about how our iPhone works. Hopefully it provides the same functionality as it’s big brother does. I want to see things like exact free space measurements on my iPhone. I’m interested in knowing the breakdowns that are going on inside the iPhone. What if we could see the network activity on our iPhones with iStat? It could become a great developer tool even. They could test their app and run iStat on it.
Anyway those are just pipe dreams, the first real use of iStat on the iPhone is going to come in the shape of monitoring other computers through this app. There is a version of iStat for the Mac that’s called iStat Server, which obviously make it very easy to monitor those stats through an outside source. This is perfect for the iPhone app. Just as this screenshot below shows, you can monitor your whole system from outside of your system. It will coming in handy for server administrators as it even has displays the uptime and server load within the app. What a great way to remotely check on all of your servers if it’s needed. You can even ping and trace route, to help fix connection problems on the go. Take a look at that great interface

iStat, and iStat Server are completely free pieces of software but of course the iPhone app cost a little bit of money. I believe it should come in at an introductory price of $1.99 and is usually going to cost $2.99. Personally I’ll be honest, I don’t have much of a need to monitor my one computer from my iPhone. Hah, but I know plenty of other people who do find genuine use out of something like this. I’m more interested in seeing what’s going on in my iPhone than monitoring other systems. So with all of that said, it’s your turn to leave me your thoughts. Do you see this as something useful, or not? I want to know, leave a comment and we’ll discuss the pro’s and con’s all day. Thanks for reading!
