Find Your Meal With The iPhone
August 6, 2008 by Ryan Ray
We all knew the iPhone does just about everything, so what can it do when it comes to food? Well I’ve got the solution for you. For the first time in HD video we’ll cover some great apps that can help you cure your craving. If that craving is for Seafood, Mexican, Chinese, or just some pizza and soda the iPhone will point you in the right direction. All of these apps were free, one (Google Maps) already comes on your iPhone. If you want to get one of these apps I’ll give you the links to the App store at the bottom of the post. So let’s get started shall we.
The first app is called iWant. iWant does many other things as you’ll see besides find food. Things such as find grocery stores, pharmacies, and even gas stations. It’s an awesome free app, definitely worth a download check out my screen shot of it’s main menu. It uses GPS to locate you, then find what you want closest to you. It works very quick and very smooth.

The second app goes by the name Urbanspoon. It’s name implies what it does, but this app throws a unique twist into finding food. It’s main feature is that it helps suggest food for you. This is perfect for the people like my girlfriend who can’t decide where to eat. You can tell by the screenshots below that it has an interface very similar to a slot machine. Three columns that help you choose suburbs of major cities, as this app only works in major cities so far. The second column has different foods such as Burgers, Indian, Mexican, etc… and finally the third let’s you dictate the price. All of these columns are lockable incase you only want it to suggest Mexican food for instance. To use the apps main feature you just shake your iPhone and it starts the slot machine into action. It will then suggest a restaurant based on your input. It’s a really cool application for those really indecisive times when you just can’t decide what to eat.

The third app is LocalPicks, it’s a very simple app and works very similar to iWant. Personally iWant is much smoother and easier to use, but this is still an option for people searching for food. LocalPicks uses GPS and lists food from closest to furthest away with a ratings system to help you pick. Some people may prefer LocalPicks some may choose iWant. Just check out my screenshot below

The last food finding app is called Where. It has other services inside the app with things like nearby gas stations, and nearby starbucks, but it has the Yelp system built into it. Now there is also a standalone Yelp app, but I like the other features that are also in the app Where. Yelp is a pretty popular app and it’s very easy to use. It uses GPS as well to locate you and restaurants nearby. Another great app to help you find some grub.

BONUS
Now don’t forget about the immensely popular Google Maps, with Google Maps you can find food as well as directions to the food. It doesn’t have ratings or reviews or anything like the other apps provide, but this is the original iPhone food finder. Apple even made a commercial about it’s abilities. Simply have Google Maps locate then search for restaurants and you should find some. Another great way to find food with your iPhone.

If you noticed there is a bonus app I threw into the video because it was related to food. This one helps you split the ticket if you go out with a group of people. I’ve been to Applebee’s before with a large group and they gave us one ticket. With this app splitting up that tickets would have been a walk in the park, but each of us had to tell our waitress what we got so she could split it up. I imagine this app will be useful in a few situations so I put it in at the end of the video. So if I’ve made you hungry now with all of this talk about food, get your iPhone ready and find yourself some grub to chow down on. If you have any thoughts or if you know of more apps that help find food or are related to food let me know! Hope you enjoy the video below.
