iPhone Software 2.0.2 Update Review
August 26, 2008 by Derek Walter
After slowly rolling out its first software update, the recent 2.0.2 release is getting major play on Apple’s web site.
It’s Apple’s latest attempt to patch some of the holes that are keeping its customers from full iPhone 3G bliss. The complaints about the 2.0 software include keyboard freezes, reception issues, and program crashes.
About a month ago Apple released 2.0.1, the first patch that included what Apple called generically “bug fixes.” But most forums indicated that it didn’t solve much of an issues. Some of the same bugs and other problems seemed to resurface a few days after the download.
During a recent trip in San Francisco I experienced the problems first-hand. When I walked into restaurants or buildings I would often lose a signal completely. Along the Embarcadero near the bay there was a dead spot in which it took me ten minutes to find a signal. Eventually it became easier to turn off 3G because of the iPhone’s annoying tendency to hang on to every last bar of 3G before switching over to EDGE. Sure, EDGE is horrible for web browsing, but at least having a consistent connection keeps you from dropping a call.
Initial indications from the 2.0.2 update are that it resolves a number of issues. The typing and app hiccups appeared to subside. There were some reports, however, of apps disappearing after installing the update. Despite the various concerns, it is worth installing the update. It is likely one step in a series of fixes that will hopefully lead to a permanent solution. If Apple is to truly continue its dominating streak, it must get its some of these peripheral issues under control.
