Not In Beijing? Use Your iPhone!
August 13, 2008 by Ryan Ray
The Olympics started way back, five whole days ago on the 8th of August, 8.8.08. Since then I really haven’t kept track of the competitions. I caught some mens volleyball, the womens bike race, and barely some of the mens swimming. I just so happened to miss the mens 400m!! I knew the French swimmers were saying they were to crush the US, but I didn’t watch it to see what happened! UGHH! Have you been keeping up with the olympics. To do so you have to stay glued to your TV for 24 hours. This is quite impossible for me as I have to work, eat, shower, and live my life away from the TV. So how in the world am I going to keep track of the Olympics? Well I will tell you how and yes it involves your iPhone, thank the Lord!
Despite the lip syncing, computer generated fireworks, BSOD’s, and fake birth certificates, I still want to see what country and who is winning what at the Olympics. Thankfully I bought an iPhone on July 11th, not knowing this would help me keep up with the Olympic games. With that said I have three wonderful ways to track the Olympics from your iPhone. Two are apps in the app store, and one is a web app. Now let me show you how we’re going to keep track of all the gold medal winners.
Lenovo Summer Olympics 2008
First up is the Lenovo Olympics app. This app is obviously made by Lenovo, and it’s completely free in the app store. With this app you can check out photos, news, athlete bios, and blogs. Thanks to NBC having a stanglehold on the Olympics there is no streaming video. I like this first app as it is free and easy to use. You can easily find what you want to catch up on, and then get your pictures etc… from the event. Take a look at the screen shot below to get a feel for it.

Mippin Olympics
The good thing about Mippin is that it’s a web app. They already make a mobile site that keeps you connected to the world of sports, but this time they’ve added a Olympics section here. There is no downloading this app and having it take up space on your home screen. It has a nice clean interface and you can quickly get to the Olympics, things like events, scores, and who’s got what medal. As long as NBC says you can.

Fandora’s Box
This last app will actually set you back 99 cents. I know it’s a tough loss to fork over 99 cents but this app should be worth it. As you can see it helps you keep track of medal standings as well as get the schedule of events and news from these events. My favorite feature that the others don’t have, or don’t make as easy is the medal standings. Somehow China is in the lead in this screenshot, but I bet Phelps is going to beat China single handidly. What about you? All joking aside this app is very well put together, and worth checking out

The Olympics are not something you want to miss, even if you hate sports the Olympics are something so big that brings the world together you can’t help but take part in the spectacle. We need to have pride in our teams, and it’s a lot of fun to watch the competitions. You get to see many sports you never would see on TV, or even on ESPN. These iPhone applications will definitely help you get your fix of news and photos when you can’t be near the TV. Of course you could just go to NBC.com since they are the mighty ruler of all Olympic coverage, it’s just more fun in a native app.
So what do you think about the Olympics? Is China full of it? Is NBC a little ridicoulous? Either way it’s not to be missed. Go USA!
