Let Your iPhone Put You To Sleep
August 23, 2008 by Ryan Ray
Let’s take one step back for just a minute. Our lives are ruled by technology, everything we do from waking up to working relies so heavily on our technology. What would we do if all of the worlds power were shut off for one week. Even better what would happen just for one day if we only relied on ourselves to get things done. Total Chaos is the answer!! For if we didn’t have technology some of our professions wouldn’t exist. Off the top of my head creative jobs like photography, broadcasting, video, would not exist without these things. Our lives revolve around it constantly all day. Checking email as soon as we get up like I do, then on to Twitter, then into Photoshop, or perhaps Final Cut for that day.
So it is no surprise when we try to go to bed that we just can’t disconnect. This might be a bad thing but somedays I just can’t drag myself away from work to relax for a second. I’ve been better this summer about that though. I give myself a break from the screen every hour or so. My eyes have thanked me. and I quit working on my own projects and clients projects roughly around 5, and even sooner if I feel like I can’t take it anymore. It’s increased my productivity to say the least. I never use to give myself hours to work by. I would just consume as much work as I could until I was dead tired. So what does all of this have to do with the iPhone or sleep?
Well a side effect of living our digital lives is our sleep deprivation. Did you know that %74 of Americans don’t get enough sleep each night. That means only the sweet, elderly folks are getting enough sleep in todays world! Crazy stuff right? It’s obvious when we don’t sleep enough or sleep well enough when we all feel groggy at some point during the week, and our health is reeling from it. We wouldn’t need an alarm clock if we got enough sleep during the night, believe it it’s true. These facts come from the National Sleep Foundation.
So here is where the iPhone can help us out. This app is called aSleep, and it’s main purpose is to help us sleep. I know when I go to bed I like it to be silent, and the lights out in the room. It’s sometimes rough when my roommate wants to stay up all night playing counter strike. With an app like this it will help me relax and get my sleep this year. Here’s what it can do for you. It lets you choose a calming, soothing sound to repeat that will help you fall asleep quicker and sleep longer. As you can see from the screenshots that you can pick the sound you want to lull you off to lullaby land. Things like the beach, crashing waves with or without seagulls, bubbles, airline cabin, etc… Any soothing noise is in here. Then from there you can pick how long you want this sound to go on for. It can go all the way up to 23 hours which your iPhone should be dead by then, haha. If you want to see all of the sounds check out it’s app store page. aSleep has quite a sound library and I’d imagine it’s only going to keep getting bigger as the app grows.
This app is infact in the top of the “what’s hot” section in the app store for good reasons. Many of us love to sleep but just can’t get to it fast enough. We all like to have a sound going such as the TV as we sleep, this is what my mom does and it keeps me up sometimes when I’m home. If you just plugin your headphones to your iPhone and listen to these calming sounds, you’ll be off dreaming in no time. The app is only 99 cents. A steal for the wealth it provides.
Trust me when I say a goodnights sleep will give you more energy for your day, make you more productive, improve your health, besides making you nice to be around. Do yourself and us a favor and pick up this app as I did. Let’s all sleeptight eh? What are your thoughts on sleep and not sleeping enough? You let me know by leaving me a comment. Thanks!
