iPhone 3.0 Finally!
March 17, 2009 by Ryan Ray
Well well well, I don’t believe it. The day has come and all has been made right with the iPhone. Today Apple hosted an event where they gave us a sneak peak into the new iPhone software, the iPhone OS 3.0. The event kicked off at 1 Eastern time here and many great things were announced. Sadly they aren’t coming to the iPhone this very day, but shortly in the future we will all enjoy an even better version of our current iPhones. As a side note, if all goes well I will be selling my iPhone 3G before the announcement of the 3rd version of the iPhone. If you want one you can purchase mine! Anyway let’s go over what was announced today.
- In-App Purchasing: Allows developers to sell additional content from within applications. Highlighted uses include magazine subscriptions, eBooks, additional levels and items for games.
- Peer-to-Peer Connectivity: Find other devices running the app via Bonjour over Wi-Fi of Bluetooth. Good for gaming, but also other applications for sharing data.
- Third-Party Accessory Apps: Allowing accessory manufacturers to create applications to interface with their hardware accessories.
- Push Notification: Rather than using background processes that hamper battery life, utilize third-party server to push badge, text, and audio alerts from applications.
- Turn by Turn: Apple will allow developers to use CoreLocation for turn-by-turn GPS directions.
- Cut, Copy and Paste: Available across all apps. Shake to undo or redo.
- Landscape keyboard: Available in all key applications, including Mail.
- MMS: Picture messaging now available.
- Voice Memos: Record notes, lectures, interviews, etc.
- Spotlight Search: Available across all applications. Systemwide search available from main home screen by flicking to the left.
- A2DP Bluetooth: Support for stereo bluetooth headsets.
This comes straight from macrumors and pretty much sums up the biggest highlights from this event. First off can you believe Copy and Past AND MMS are coming to the iPhone at the same time. I told everyone it would. It has taken Apple a little too long but I can’t complain because it will finally be a reality on our iPhones. Hallelujah. Copy and paste has a pretty cool gesture to it, for instance paste something you didn’t want to just shake to undo. Also that shaking motion has come to the iPod part of the iPhone to shuffle songs. MMS will be welcomed as well as not everyone has email on their phone yet.
Those things among some other features are great improvements, but here is what has got me jumping for joy. Turn by Turn navigation and Push Notification. These are the two things I’ve been the biggest pusher of, and then trying to tell all my friends to just be patient it’s coming. Finally we have a date of arrival, summer 2009! I will get so much use out of both these new features it’s going to be crazy how I survived without them before.
Like I said earlier Apple has made all well. Many people are very happy with the update that’s coming, count me in that group of people. The update is free to all iPhone users and 9.99 for iPod Touch users. A worthy price, after all you should just buy an iPhone.
Now you tell me, out of all that was announced today, what are you looking forward to?
