iPhone 2.0.1 Firmware First Look

August 5, 2008 by Derek Walter

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my iTunes. The download takes a while, so make sure you have something else to do during the several minutes it will take to finish with the file. And there’s not a lot of detail from Apple about what it’s supposed to fix:

After playing with it for a while, the lag when opening contacts (probably the iPhone’s most annoying bug) is much improved. Sometimes it fires up right away. Other times there is still a slight delay, but I haven’t experienced yet those two-to-three second lags that made it really annoying when trying to find or call a contact. There’s nothing better than getting someone’s number and then looking foolish as you stare at your unresponsive screen. While this is a good improvement, future updates that made this work even smoother would be greatly welcome.

There was a slight improvement to the responsiveness of the virtual keyboard. I did not experience any of that occasional lag when you hit a key on occasion. It is a lot easier to type an email when you don’t have to wait for the letters to load.

However, the update isn’t good news for hackers. Apparently this update removes the apps from your jailbroken phone. So you might want to wait until there’s a workaround before loading up this latest software release.

If you have any experiences, good or bad, with the new firmware update, post them here.
