Home Improvement With The iPhone & iHandy Level
June 3, 2009 by Ryan Ray
This is a great day to tell you about this fun app that combines the ultimate nerdism with a home improvement, handy man. It’s rainy and dreary outside where I am today which means I’m stuck inside. Rain is skateboarding’s worst enemy, rusty bearings, board splitting and warping, it’s just not good to skate in the rain. Fishing can sometimes be good, but it’s chilly and rainy out. Nothing’s worse than being soaked and chilly. Especially if it were on a boat in the middle of a lake. So those two are out of the question. A good game of ultimate frisbee can happen on a rainy day, but sadly I don’t know many people around here where I can quickly put together a game. So what am I left to do? Oh that’s right, home improvement. Thankfully the iPhone is there waiting with a hand full of apps ready to assist in our DIY projects.
This specific app belongs to a whole suite of apps that you can purchase for a cheap $1.99. I’m actually tempted to after this little project I did. The app itself is called iHandy Level and is free in the app store. I picked it up just for fun not knowing when I would really use it, but the day finally came when I could put it to use. I had bought this cork board that’s split down the middle. The left half is the actual cork, while the right is a dry erase board. I wanted to use this to write down a “to-do” list for the day as it sits right next to my desk.
As I went to hang it it dawned on me that I have a leveling app on my iPhone and should use it. Then I even went one step further and said let’s make a video out of it. I’m not sure who the other person is when I say let’s but I made a video none the less. Below is a screenshot of the main screen and only screen of the app, besides the screen that advertises the whole suit. It’s pretty darn straight forward and lets you get to leveling right away. The classic bubble level is front and center with the degree measurements to the top left. The two buttons in the lower left let you re-caliber if you so need to. Be careful though as I found you can’t reset the calibration if you need to. The only option is to delete the app and redownload it, if you are listening developer please build that in! As for right now I’d stay away from calibration. The next button lets you hold the current position of the level. Just in case you need to freeze it and show someone the degree measurement.

This shot below is an example of the level on hold. The button is red so you know that it’s being held, it also says release as well.

The final screenshot is the advertisement I mentioned earlier. You can get to this by tapping on the toolbox in the upper right hand corner from the main screen. It is a simple showcase for the all in one iHandy Carpenter app that was also mentioned earlier. Just something to think about if you really liked the level.

So there you have it. In my opinion one of the cleanest looking and best working level app out there in the app store. It’s completely free and will get the job done. I may check out the full suite just because of this app and get back to you on that as well. Below is the video I told you I made. Check it out and let me know what your thoughts are on an app like this, I appreciate it!
