Facebook Version 2.0

October 3, 2008 by Ryan Ray

Today the iPhone world just got a little sweeter. Can you guess how that would ever happen? I know all of our money is in trouble, but thanks to Facebook us iPhone/iPod Touch users have a reason to get up in the morning. Mark Zuckerburg and friends have put out a fantastic update to the native iPhone Facebook application. I’m labeling it Facebook 2.0. Do you remember the specific Facebook for iPhone website? It was wonderful, and one of the first of it’s kind. At that point in time no one else had really put out an iPhone specific website. It really did show off the power of the iPhone’s web browser. I mean if you look at CNN’s mobile site (since they don’t have one just for the iPhone), it’s weak compared to how well Facebook pulled their website off just for the iPhone.

If you were unaware that Facebook did have their own native app for the iPhone then you haven’t been missing out on much. Really after seeing this revitalized app, it makes the first attempts seem very half baked. The first release wasn’t a show stopper, in fact it didn’t even have all the bells and whistles that their web app did. It was slightly bloated and unstable as well at first. For awhile there I just went to the mobile web version. It honestly just worked better. With this update though they’ve improved many a many of things. Check out the pictures below and let me list off the new features.

Here’s what’s new in this behemoth update;

We’ve now got notifications, the FULL news feed as well as the ability to comment on it, you can search for people as well as in your inbox, add friends, upload, tag, and caption photos, post photos to walls, your entire inbox is now there, and FINALLY message attachments!

In my own, personal experience I must say I really like the update. I never used the previous version much because like I said, it was a lackluster experience. Now though the app has an awesome new interface, I really like the app tab bar, or whatever they want to call it. It’s a perfect solution to access other things like photos, notes, etc… The thing I look for the most is how similar is this experience to the desktop experience? I know, I know many of you crazy folks hate the new facebook layout. I’m fine with it, but I also jumped on it early and got used to it. That’s just how I am though. Many were forced unwillingly to use the new Facebook so I feel your pain. The app is stable and quick, responsive and full of awesome things to tap at and see what they do. I think I’ve said it before, but the Facebook app is an awesome extension of my contacts. Some of my friends put their contact info up on their profiles, and I can use Facebook to get ahold of them.

All in all, the Facebook developers got this one right on. If you keep these kind of improvements coming, I’ll be wasting more of my time on Facebook. It’s a good and bad thing, one of those love/hate situations. If you’ve downloaded this bad boy let me know what you think about it. Is it good, are you even more confused now? Too much new Facebook to handle? It’s a free update so go get it and let me know your opinion! Thanks everyone!
