Convert Bot A Great Conversion App

September 2, 2009 by Ryan Ray

I thought as I was back in school, studying my butt off, I’d share with you a pretty practical app. I’ll continue in the top 5 apps series soon, maybe later tonight. The app is great for converting pretty much anything to anything. The app is called ConvertBot, and it’s only $.99 in the app store. Definitely worth the beauty and function in this app.

Obviously the app does one thing, and it does it very well. One of the smoothest and most slick looking apps I’ve come across in awhile. According to the iTunes Store there are 440 ways to convert to and from within this app. I’ll list a few now, just so you know.

  1. Angle
  2. Area
  3. Currency
  4. Data Rate
  5. Data Size
  6. Force
  7. Fuel
  8. Illuminance
  9. Length
  10. Mass
  11. Power
  12. Pressure
  13. Radioactivity
  14. Speed

And the list goes on… The app will convert just about anything you can think of.

Now let’s talk a little more in depth about the app, and how to work it. When you first open the app this is the site you will see. A beautifully designed interface. I can’t tell you how nice it is to come across apps that have wonderful interfaces. This one works in both looking great and being very functional. As you can see that this big wheel in the middle is your main way of navigating the app. This is where you choose what you are going to be converting. Whether that be distances, speed, power, etc… etc… Remember that the developer says there are over 440 ways to convert within the app. To choose what you want to convert simply slide it around in a very similar fashion to the old iPod clickwheel. I still have an iPod classic by the way, I haven’t been able to drop it for my iPhone. My music library is close to 80GB, the biggest is iPhone is 32GB. Easy math, it all just won’t fit.

The screen shot below shows you the first step in setting up your conversion. To start tap on the left side where you know see two dashes. This sets up the conversion you want to go from. Since I’m from the U.S. I chose the U.S. Dollar to go from. Once you’ve got it, simply hit the big OK button in the middle of the app. Next just do the same thing to setup what you want to convert to. Tap on the right side and pick your weapon of choice. A popular conversion is to Euro’s. The setup is really that simple. Now to enter the numbers…

To get to this screen, tap on the top half of the app. Where the numbers are. The wheel slides out and in comes this great looking number pad. Tap either in the From or To section to enter your info there. It automatically converts as you enter numbers. In the bottom row you see the 3 buttons. The middle one will quickly swap your conversions From and To categories. From USD to EUR, and EUR to USD. Clearly the red button is the backspace or delete. You can tap it to delete one number at a time or hold it in and clear the whole input area.

I can’t tell you how much I love this app. Even if I don’t do that much conversion. The interface and beauty of the app do it for me. It functions well and simple, and it only comes in at $.99 Definitely pick this app up if you need to do any conversions for school, work, fun, etc… This is the only one you need IMHO.
