Finally, the day has come! There’s a funny, novelty iPhone app that has their sights set after our heart. Not that the app is called iPhone nuts or anything, if someone still wants to make one with our namesake The app does combine the iPhone and nuts though. The app is called Magic Mover and apparently can do just that.

It can move random objects with your iPhone. I don’t know if you remember ever seeing this app but these guys are the same people who created an app that can move objects by blowing air. This one essentially does the same thing but with vibration. Check out their site if you want to see their other pretty funny apps.

That thing up above is a screen shot of the app as it waits for you to put it in motion. As gimmicky as the app sounds and really is, IMHO, it does work for most people. Well for the most part it works that is. Some people have found the app vibrates their phone the wrong way as the bulldozer pushes your phone to the left but it may actually vibrate to the right. This of course all depends on if the surface your are on is level at all etc… but do checkout the video demonstration below to see it in perfect working order.

Now after seeing that what do you think about these kind of apps? Are they worth it, fun, why do they exist? Personally I would download this app if it was free, but I’m not ok with paying a dollar for a novelty app. I guess I don’t have that many friends to show it off to, but for some people this app may be the funnest thing to do on their iPhone for awhile. iWork On My iPhone?

We all don’t have iPads, although all of us wish we did. The iPad is lucky enough to have a whole suite of office apps called iWork from Apple waiting for you in the app store. So what are we to do when it comes to typing a long email, or even yet creating a spreadsheet or document? Perhaps this solution exist out there in the jailbreak world, but I would love to have iWork available on my iPhone. Maybe Microsoft Office, but I’ve always found iWork to be a lot cleaner and easier to use. We’ve all seen iWork on the iPad, and even though the iPhone doesn’t have quite as big of a screen I think it could work. Here’s how…

The iPad has a decently sized qwerty keyboard on it’s screen. That’s not happening on the iPhone, so the iPhone for one must get bluetooth keyboard support and it’s definitely coming in the iPhone OS 4.0, which should be renamed to Mac Touch OS 4. Just my opinion… Once we have our bluetooth keyboard support typing just got a whole lot easier on the iPhone. Now let’s say Apple will give us some kind of video out to hook up our iPhone’s to some form of monitor. Wether that be a nice Cinema Display or a projector of some sort. Hopefully the new iPhone comes with some powerful video features so the screen resolution is bigger than the current one. From the prototype leak we should be expecting some nice resolution on the next iPhone. Here’s a video from CNET talking about iWork on the iPad, a little boring but you get the gist of the suite.

Since the iPhone by itself is not suited for iWork, we’d also need support for a bluetooth mouse. This isn’t quite necessary, though would be nice, for iWork on the iPad. Imagine though on the iPhone typing on your nice full size keyboard, kind of like I am right now, then having to squint and push your way around on the iPhone to do any work. Like I said the screen is too small for iWork on the iPhone. If we have video out to a decent sized monitor and bluetooth mouse support we’re basically turning the iPhone into a mini computer. Which is an awesome idea in itself. To carry around a phone that can also double as a decent desktop computer with a fully capable set of document creating apps, not to mention Facebook, and Twitter…

Alright so maybe the iPhone should stay as it is. The iPad has a beautiful screen and is a very powerful mobile device. I definitely see that as a great option for the iPad, as you don’t need an external monitor as you would for the iPhone. But maybe, just maybe, we can get something from Apple for document creation. Or perhaps a 3rd party developer wants to cash in on that opportunity? I’d hate to have to turn to the jailbreak community for something so simple

Metronome Faceoff

The metronome has been on my mind quite a bit lately. I’ve been in the studio recording with John Tibbs, and we’ve noticed how inexperienced we are with the metronome. Although I have practiced quite a bit to a metronome our tracks still aren’t perfect and it’s only a little annoying that I can’t play the drums like a machine. All through high school I practiced my rudiments, fills, and beats to a click. I’ve obviously been a little out of regular practice thanks to college consuming most of my time, which is ANNOYING. None the less, when it comes to the iPhone you can easily find a good metronome. I’ve actually found two that I am going to put up head to head today and see what you guys and gals think about each.

The first up is my favorite metronome, it goes by the name Beats. The thing is is that it’s the simplest of metronomes out there. Perhaps someday it’ll be updated with additional functionality, but I love it for now. It’s got a great tap tempo that I use quite often, and just check out that interface. It’s beautiful!! You should know by now I love a great interface. I also love this app for the click sound it has built in. You do have 4 options in the settings for sounds, but the default click is great. Not too piercing but it doesn’t get muddled up in the rest of your mix. The app also has a key selector for any major and minor key, again nothing terribly complex. This app works perfect for me on Sunday mornings at church to set my tempos. Definitely smooth and beautiful, well worth the money. Below are some shots of the beautiful, dark, interface.

The second metronome I’ve recently started experimenting with is called Metron. This is the app I would go to as a work horse. This metronome can be programmed in so many different ways, I still can’t wrap my head around all of it. The great thing is that I can save sequences for songs we may play live. This could be my metronome solution on the road. This one also has a tap tempo, the little icon in the middle in portrait orientation. Some people seem to miss that! The interface leaves me vying to go back to beats, but I reluctantly stay when I need the power of Metron. Just check it out for yourself…

Perhaps Metron will see this and get on some improvements soon! I’d love the app then, just a new paint of coat. As you can see as well the app has a pitch pipe, and the regular settings. One interesting thing I’d love to try out is the sharing tab. Apparently we can share our metron settings with others. I’d be very intrigued to test this out.

That about wraps up all I have on these two metronome apps, yes both of these cost 1.99 each but definitely worth it in their own regards. I know there are a ton of free metronome apps out there, but they probably don’t provide the same value as these. What ones do you use, and why do you like them so much? Let me know!

Opera… It’s Alright

I think hell has frozen over, because Opera and their mobile web browser was approved and is now up for download in the App store. Can you believe that? I mean really, it’s a little crazy to think. Doesn’t this go against Apple’s own terms of service? None the less we must all live with reality and say that Safari has some competition headed its way! This is a good thing. I hope this makes way for things like Firefox, IE6… HAH just kidding about that. So check out what Opera Mini looks like.

It’s not a bad interface at all, but definitely a stark change from the grey minimalist Safari we are all used to. The layout is similar. URL bar, search up top. Then at the bottom are navigation arrows refresh, tabs, and settings. So what makes this so special besides being a second browser to Safari? Well the fact is that it’s FAST, no really. It’s REALLY FAST. I believe it pulls of this trick with some behind the scenes server happening at Opera but to the end user what does that matter? Check out the video of Opera v. Safari below.

See what I’m saying? The browser loaded the full site much faster than Safari loaded the mobile version! Honestly that is it’s big feature over Safari. I love Safari and am very familiar with it, Opera isn’t that different but it’s interface is new to me. One other thing that Opera offers is different search options. You can change where you search right from within the search bar. Check out some of the screen shots below.

As you can see in the second shot, those are your search options, pretty cool if you ask me. In the first shot you can see some of the settings for Opera. You can check out bookmarks, history, settings, and more. That’s also a nice little plus outside of Safari. Lastly take a quick look at shot 4. That’s what their tabs look like. You can also check out tabbed browsing in the video above. Another cool implementation of it.

So what is Apple thinking with letting other browsers into the app store? Are they starting to give the people what they want and give Safari some competition? Let’s hope so, competition always wins out for the customer. Hurry up and go grab your download of Opera in the app store. Echofon A Hidden Gem

There is entirely too much chatter about Twitter on the internet, but I’m just going to add to it. I’ve talked plenty of times about Twitter and the iPhone. It seems to be a perfect combination. Tweeting about current happenings wherever you are. But coming back from the mobile experience, the desktop is often ignored. There are a ton of great iPhone apps out there that make using Twitter beautiful on the go, but when I come back to my iMac I want the two worlds connected. Is that so much to ask? I’ve tried every Twitter client and waited and waited for the one that will take this task on. Enter Echofon, I’ve heard a lot about it before but never gave it a chance to win my heart. Today though, is a new day. Echofon has just taken over and become my main squeeze for Tweeting on the go and from the desktop. So listen up and let me give you a run down of how this happened, and what makes Echofon so unique to me.

Echofon is initially a free app that has a great interface, it’s clean and simple as you’ll see by some of my screenshots. Nothing fancy to it, it functions just as well as my previous favorite app Tweetie 2. The thing that puts Echofon over the edge for me is it’s ability to do push notifications and sync with the desktop client. Which is available for Mac, FireFox, and more! All that is require to set this up is to download and install both the mobile and desktop version on your machines. Setup your accounts then enable the sync between the two! It’s beautifully simple. Only one of the great features they use to put Echofon above the rest of the competition. The thing that got me to pay $4.99 was push notifications for your Twitter accounts. I routinely do my best at managing four Twitter accounts, but so far I’ve only enable push notifications on my personal account. So if you want me to get a push message send me a tweet at @ryanr14!

Push notifications are one of my favorite things, and can start turning Twitter on my iPhone a rival for text messaging. I pay both $30 for unlimited data and our family plan is $30 for unlimited text, which do you think takes more bandwidth? Text or data!? I wish texting was included with data. Someone tell AT&T and all mobile phone companies to quit being pigs. Anyway end of rant, let’s check out the interface for this.

White, clean, contrast where needed, etc… Almost as beautiful as Tweetie’s but like I said it’s extra features have pushed me over the edge and I’m now an Echofon user. I got tired of waiting for Tweetie to update it’s desktop app, as I’m sure many others were too. All in all, if you are still searching as I was and will be for the perfect Twitter client give Echofon a try. It’s free until you want push notifications from non Echofon users. A worthy upgrade IMHO. Let me know what you think about it by downloading ECHOFON now.

What’s Your Favorite Weather App (Video)

So you want to know how to get more weather info out of your iPhone than it’s simple yet weak built in weather application? Well you’ve come by this blog at the right time because today we’re going to talk about my two favorite weather app besides the built in one. Those are the Weather Channel app and one called The Weather, one has a free version and one is just $0.99. Read on to find out more…

We’ll start with the Weather Channel app. This was the first one I got outside of the built in one. There isn’t anything wrong with the built in one. It provides a quick outlook on the next five days, and you can easily swipe from one city to the next if you dare to do so. It’s just that I want a radar and more info about the weather. The Weather Channel app was the first good one I found and it was free! It easily gives you the current weather conditions when your first open the app. It gives you the temp, what it really feels like, wind, humidity, dew point, sunrise and sunset, and much more. That’s just the first tab too, on the second tab you can check out the weather hourly so you know how to prepare yourself for the day. For instance if it’s supposed to rain when I’m getting out of class, I’ll bring an umbrella! Common sense stuff, but the Weather Channel app makes it much easier to get the info when and how I want it. I no longer have to turn on the TV and catch weather on the 8’s like they do.

The next tab has a 36 hour weather forecast on it. Has the low and hi plus wind and more. Good to plan for a weekend or something that last about 2-3 days! It’s final last tab is a 10 day forecast. I use this to look ahead for a glimpse of warm weather coming, or a good thunder storm! The app isn’t done there, below the four main tabs is a place to explore the doppler radar. The app overlays radar on Google maps and you can put in any location you want to check out the radar there. From there there are two more tabs that I don’t really use. Those are video, which has a weather channel video for the day. Then the last one is for severe weather. All in all a good app, still my current raining champion (no pun intended)

The second app I’ve recently been trying out is called The Weather. it’s interface is much more my style. Here is a pic for proof…

As you can see it has a grid layout of the current weather in the top 3/4. In the bottom it will tell you the current days forecast. So you can see for today it’s going to be 72! Hallelujah! Good thing I’ll be inside all day working my tail off.

If you go under the radar tab that will obviously show you the radar. It’s in the same fashion as The Weather Channel’s radar. It also adds in the ability to see cameras that people put outside. You can just tap on one to see what it sees currently. I like to do that from time to time. Something the Weather Channel doesn’t offer. It’s last tab is a 5 day forecast it also includes the current days. 6 forecast in total but 5 into the future. If you tap on one of the days it will show you more information. It’s very clean and easy to use.

The Weather app is really starting to grow on me, I have to decide eventually because I don’t want two weather apps hogging screen real estate. Facebook For The iPhone…STINKS

I need to rant a little bit, so read on and join in if you have similar experiences. If you’ve recently used the Facebook app for the iPhone I hope you can relate here when I say, IT SUCKS. Now that might seem harsh but hear me out.

Facebook has become to most trafficked website, passing Google. This is a huge deal. Facebook was one of the first, if not the first big website to develop a site just for the iPhone browser. It was slick, it didn’t offer everything the normal site offered. That was half of the beauty of it though. You could easily see the features that made Facebook hugely successful. That site still exists today, but there is something that’s supposed to be one step better. That’s the NATIVE Facebook iPhone app. Honestly that app is actually quite great, the thing is that it’s prone to crashing and at the very least sluggish performance.

My first problem is I’me experiencing dismal performance, anyone else out there like me? It may be that I should blame the massive amounts of data Facebook has instead of that app. On the other hand their website on my iMac works just fine…for the most part. There is just this oddity that comes up every once in awhile that makes the app freeze, or at least crawl at a turtles pace. Like I said I’m not sure if this is because there is too much data to push around or if the app’s coding is just poor. I hope that app is coded as best it can be, Facebook surely has enough funds to get some great developers in on their app. I know of smaller companies that produce much quicker and fresher apps.

Secondly, why can’t we watch video from Facebook on our iPhones yet? This feature has been lacking for quite a long time, this I’m sure isn’t dependent on the app but mostly on them serving videos formatted for the iPhone. If you could hurry that switch up that’d be a good thing!

Third and final complaint… This is a small annoyance, but it annoys me none the less. I want to know why when I post a link on my iPhone it doesn’t show up the same as if I posted from my desktop? For instance when posting a Flickr link from my iPhone I don’t get the cool thumbnail and description, just a blue link to the Flickr page… what gives! It’s the same for any picture link or video link. I don’t understand that one.

That’s all I want to rant about right now, I was once addicted to Facebook but it’s become only a nightly habit before I go to bed. That stems from me being pretty busy, but also the site just get’s more annoying to use as time goes on. Their poor iPhone app performance doesn’t help either! Let’s all hope Facebook pulls it together soon. Focus Facebook Focus!

Streaming Live From Your iPhone

Hey everyone, it is finally Friday and new posts are going to start coming fast! As we go into the weekend we’re going to talk about one awesome way to stream live video from your iPhone. I don’t know if you are wondering why someone would ever want to stream video from their iPhone, or how this even works in the first place, but for some reason it’s a wanted feature of iPhone owners.

One way to do this outside of jail breaking is the Ustream Broadcaster app. We talked about the Ustream app before. It’s a free app and also has a brother app called the Ustream viewer. I wish someday soon Ustream will combine the apps, no need to take up two spots on my iPhone’s screen. None the less their streaming app is light and clean. I used it last night while I was in the studio with John Tibbs. I streamed some video while he did vocal takes and piano takes. You can watch him in the studio if you want. That will give you an idea of the quality of the video. It’s obviously not HD or anything close to it, but it serves it’s purpose. Below are some screenshots of the app…

Check out that awesome bright, glowing green logo in the top left corner of my iPhone. Once you’ve opened the app you’ll get presented with these options if you have it set to do so on startup. You can choose one of the modes automatically if you’d rather automatically stream live in the options panel. So once you’ve chosen live this is what you’ll see plus the options panel…

As you can see in the live window you see what you iPhone’s camera is seeing, then the dark grey area has information pop up on it and other things like a twitter feed, or facebook comments, etc… One really cool part of the app. To actually start streaming just tap go live, or you can record to your iPhone by tapping to phone. Either way you’ll soon be recording video. The apps settings are very simple, choose a default channel incase you have more than one account. Do you want to send your video live or record to the iPhone, how about the quality, etc…

Once you’ve started streaming live the app will automatically send out a tweet to tell people to check out your live stream. Last night when I did this we had about 6 people at one time watching the live stream, which is pretty cool if you ask me. I can also send out a poll. For instance last night we were previewing a song in the studio and I sent out a poll asking if they liked what they hear so far. They can then vote yes or no as in a normal poll, another really cool feature. The app also shows you how many people are viewing it at a time, in real time too. Our numbers fluctuated from 2-6 a lot.

After all is said and done you can then save the video to your Ustream profile for viewing at anytime. So far Ustream has been a great app to stream this kind of stuff. If you are in a band, at a live event such as a concert or game, etc… it’s be cool to stream what you are doing live. There is just something about being able to have your own internet TV show live in seconds that is very cool. So definitely check out the app, we may talk about a few other streaming apps in the near future. Have a great Friday!

The Most Ridiculous Apps : iTinkle

I’ve come across quite a few apps that make me sit there, scratch my head, and say someone really spent the time to develop this app? I’ve decided since they are just soo far out there that I should gather my top three into a short series before the weekend and let you all know about them. I’m not saying that I like or hate them, only that the idea behind the app is pretty senseless if not useless. That’s only for me though, maybe someone really does rely on an app like these to make it everyday. So heads up on this short series, it should be a good one.

This first one might be the craziest one I’ve seen yet. It goes by the name iTinkle, I provided a link for you just incase you really wanted to see it in action for yourself. Don’t worry though, if you don’t feel like spending the time downloading and installing the app there is a video of the app and it’s sounds at the end of the review. iTinkle only does one thing, and that is to play sounds of mainly water to help your feel more at ease as you use the restroom. Weird to me, and probably to a lot of people. I’m sorry if this sounds offensive to those who truly do need sounds to help relax during their bathroom break, but when I’ve got to go there is no issue with me going whenever or wherever. I mean no harm by what I’m saying, just expressing a personal opinion. It’d be cool if you do often have trouble using the bathroom to leave a comment and let us know what you think about apps like this. Many thanks in advance

So here is the interface, that is it and that is all there is to it. It’s bad because I can’t make up enough words to fill up a lengthy post. There are more pictures below.

So as you can see from the very first picture that you find the sound you want and tap the man peeing in the urinal to turn it on. I’d suggest using headphone if you are wanting to use this in any public bathroom. Just pretend you are listening to your iPod. No one should give you any weird looks, unless you unplug your headphones on accident and the “Sploosh” sound is on. Haha.

iTinkle is just the first one of two more really wacky apps. Aimed at helping people pee more at ease, except for me I feel weird just knowing there is an app for this purpose. I hope you can have fun with me finding really goofy apps. It’ll help give you a chuckle as we work towards the weekend. If you know any outlandish apps and want me to check them out to add to the first three just let me know. I love to get suggestions from you all. Tweetie 2 iPhone App

Holy smokes guys, sorry sorry sorry for the absence in writing some reviews! I hate to leave the website not up to date, but my life just gets crazy at times. I’ve been working on putting six tv shows together as a part of my minor in Broadcast Production. No worries though as I’ve brought an easy review for you guys today. Also the videos are making their return as well! So what do you say we dive into this.

Well we’re talking about a Twitter app that’s been around for quite some time, it’s name is Tweetie but it’s been upgraded to a brand new version 2. It cost a simple $2.99 and is very much worth it in my mind. I’ve paid $5 for a Twitter app that wasn’t as satisfying as this one is for me. Tweetie 2 has been completely rewritten from it’s earlier incarnation. At the moment and I feel safe to say, Tweetie 2 is well prepared for the future. Why do I say that, well let me run you through some of my favorite parts of the app.

First you all know I love great interfaces, Tweetie 2 has just that. A smooth, clean well thought out interface. You will see in the video some of what I’m talking about. It also handles multiple accounts like a charm. For the last year I feel like I’ve been stuck with TweetDeck because it incorporates groups really easily. Both between the desktop version and the iPhone version. I’ve now switched to Tweetie both on my Mac and iPhone. With Twitter’s new list feature and Tweetie already ready for lists I will be able to have my lists whenever they turn the feature on. Very excited about that. Nothing is wrong with TweetDeck, but for me Tweetie 2 works better. Take a gander for yourself at my screenshots.

First you can see the multiple accounts I help manage, then the next one is iPhone Nuts followers. Shout out to my friend Bruce Franklin ! Clean and bright interface. If you’ll notice along the bottom that you have a black bar with some icons on it. These are obviously how to navigate through your main feed, replies, direct messages, search and more. You can see more of that by watching the video

This first one is what it looks like when you swipe to the right across someones tweet. It gives you quick access to reply to them, interact with a link they might have tweeted. You can also see their profile, favorite and retweet and more. The next shot is their Twitter profile pulled up in Tweetie 2. A nice way to see or learn more about who you are tweeting with. You can also easily follow or unfollow from any account on this page.

Now, like I said I love Tweetie 2. My new obsession for my iPhone. If you are serious about your twitter account, or accounts, then be sure to check out Tweetie 2. Definitely buy the upgrade if you were already a Tweetie 1 fan. You will not be disappointed. Just read the reviews in the app store. It’s a hit!
