Apple Releasing a “Media Pad” & “iPhone Lite”

April 29, 2009 by Ryan Ray

Welcome back to some more rumors about an iPhone Lite/Nano, and potentially a new device dubbed the “Media Pad.” I know at one time I said I would no longer talk about the iPhone Nano, but I guess I lied. This rumor that I’ve picked up from is worthy of another discussion, as it doesn’t solely focus on the iPhone Nano, it brings in many new angles on the future of this device or devices.

There are new rumblings that Apple is again talking with Verizon, still while seeing AT&T. This is a whole other post to talk about, but it seems true since Apple was once talking with them to bring the iPhone out on their network. AT&T does have exclusive rights to sell the iPhone, but those end in 2010. AT&T is still fighting to push their rights out a little longer, but I believe Apple wants to be on every carrier. Unless AT&T offers up something great I think Apple will get on every carrier possible. Like I said another post for another day.

What makes this rumor interesting is the talk of two devices. Something I’m still unsure of, but can see it working out if Apple does it right. Here is what the article says about the two devices.

One device is a smaller, less expensive calling device described by a person who has seen it as an “iPhone lite.” The other is a media pad that would let users listen to music, view photos, and watch high-definition videos, the person says. It would place calls over a Wi-Fi connection. One of these devices may be introduced as early as this summer, one person says.

BusinessWeek was able to confirm with Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam that Verzion had been in talks with Apple but could not get any details from McAdam.

Instead, the magazine cites “two people familiar with the subject” as the source for these two possible Apple devices. The Apple media pad is said to be smaller than Amazon’s Kindle ebook reader but its touchscreen is bigger than the Kindle’s. The source predicts that this new product will be a category defining breakthrough device:

“The media pad category might go to Verizon,” said the person who has seen the device. “We are talking about a device where people will say, ‘Damn, why didn’t we do this?’ Apple is probably going to define the damn category.”

Meanwhile, the iPhone Lite is said to be thinner, smaller, and cheaper than the current iPhone. Most of the cost savings are said to come from a new system-on-chip that has reduced costs.

What throws me off is the idea of Apple splitting two different products over two different networks, that’s not very Apple like. Apple would more than likely have both it’s devices on the same network, whether that be AT&T or Verizon. Also the Media Pad doesn’t make much sense to me yet, as of right now I see it as a competitor to the Kindle and only the Kindle. As the article says though that this will be a breakthrough device. You know how Apple is, creating devices we didn’t even know we wanted yet!

On the iPhone Lite, I still don’t see that as being worthwhile. The two categories are already pretty defined between the iPhone that does everything. Then the iPod Touch that does everything the iPhone does, except make calls. If Apple were to try and make an iPhone Pro and iPhone Lite I think it’d be hard to seperate the two based on features. Like I said who knows what Apple is going to do. Heck, even employees working at Apple don’t even really know what they are working on half of the time.

Now it’s your turn to weigh in on this issue. Is the Media Pad going to be the tablet everyone has been waiting for, and will there be an iPhone Lite? Leave a comment and start the discussion on this. What do you think? Thanks for reading.
