The title of this post of celebration is totally true. Although it sounds like bait to come get you to read this, the reality is that Apple has beat RIM at it’s own game. If you are unaware of what RIM is let me help you out real quick. RIM, which stands for Research In Motion, is the maker of the Blackberry. Up to now the World’s most popular smartphone. It was the first phone to make head roads into the enterprise, quickly gaining its spot on the top of the business world as the phone to use. Now RIM also provides the data push support, that makes things such as email, contacts, calendars, etc.. to be updated immediately as it is pushed from their servers to your Blackberry. RIM also provides a server called Blackberry Connect which lets other smartphones like the Palm Treo use their push services. Like I mentioned RIM was sitting pretty at number 3 in the most phones sold, until this quarter where Apple has outshined them with the iPhone. Here are some hard numbers to back up the claim that the iPhone is PWNING the Blackberry…
Apple’s sold 6.9 million iPhones this quarter compared to RIM’s 6.1 million phones sold. The iPhone has become 39 percent of Apple’s business making them the world’s “third largest mobile phone supplier.” Well that is the iPhone would’ve been 39 percent of Apple’s business in this quarter if they hadn’t spread out how it’s accounted for. To me this is amazing. Also I forgot to mention they’ve already passed the 10 million iPhones sold goal they set for themselves back when the first iPhone was introduced.
So did you think they could do it? Were you doubting Apple’s ability to sell their beautiful iPhones? Personally I don’t think they would have done it without many things that happened. First off the price was lowered to $200 at the lowest and $300 at the highest. Much more affordable than what many of us paid at either $500 or $600!! They sold just over 3 million that way, but once they dropped the price they still weren’t done. Adding the 2.0 software was crucial to many adopting this phone as their go to phone. The app store is brilliant, which of in itself has exceeded over 200 million apps downloaded. Maybe the most important feature of that update was the exchange support. According to quite a few stories going around the net the iPhone is making headways into the corporate workplace. There was even an article over on infoworld that talked about the iPhone vs. the Blackberry in the enterprise, an interesting READ indeed.

To sum that article up it basically again said the iPhone pwns the Blackberry. They complained about things like copy and paste not being there on the iPhone, which hopefully will come soon. Things like the interface, ease of use, wonderful support, etc… is what won the competition for the iPhone though. I mean really if you think about the Blackberry and iPhone do the same thing for business users, but who does it cleaner, faster, more reliable?
One last point to make, the iPhone has done all of this within 15 months of going on sale. Incredible I say, and only with one model as well. Nokia and Samsung who are ahead of Apple in sales, Samsung isn’t by much, have many models of phones. Apple….ONLY ONE, and Steve said at the conference call that they will not be coming out with something like the iPhone Nano. He said it like this though, ”From everything I’ve heard, Babe Ruth only had one home run, he just kept hitting it over and over again.” It’s all about software now. “We’re extremely comfortable” doing what they’re doing, and “approaching it as a software platform.” And that’s it, that spells out the future of the iPhone. Apple will keep hitting “home runs” with the iPhone as they keep updating it at a much faster pace than anyone else is doing right now. Seems like the iPhone is unstoppable.
