Amazon’s App Reviewed
December 11, 2008 by Ryan Ray
It’s been exactly one week since Amazon launched their iPhone app. For the longest time Amazon had nothing specific for the iPhone. I mean, you do have the “whole” internet in your pocket with this phone, but it didn’t take long for Amazon to cave in under the pressure. First Amazon built their website to automatically redirect you to one built just for the iPhone. This website still exist today and is an excellent way to browse through Amazon in hopes of finding something to buy. This web app wasn’t completely native though, and couldn’t offer some of the features that Amazon must have wanted to give to us.
With that said Amazon developed their own native app and released it for FREE just last week. Of course the internet world went nuts about it. They were right to do so as well. The Amazon app is very well built. It’s fast and has a very clean interface. It’s built with that iPhone quality that a lot of developers seem to hit. Inside the app it’s not hard to get around to what you want to get to. The first time you launch the app you’ll be prompted to login, and after logging in you are greeted with that first homescreen below. It gives you the options to search Amazon or “Get Yourself a Little Something,” which it simply just pulls up your wish lists and tries to con you into buying something from Amazon. It does make it much easier than going through the website to get your wish list, I can say that much. As you can see from my screen shots, you can also get to the search function from the toolbar below. Also you can see my cart, which is empty at the moment but there I have a few things saved for later. I like that it shows those items as well.

The next feature that Amazon calls “Remembers” is a brand spanking new feature that is only available on the iPhone app. Apparently if you are out shopping and see something you may want to purchase later on Amazon you can snap a picture of it and Amazon will “remember” it. Sadly I had little to NO luck with this feature, but I can blame it on the lighting at my desk when testing this out. I have yet to test it again but I have faith that it works from many other people. The last more tab simply comes up with a screen where you can see your wish list, sign out of your account, a help/feedback section and a conditions of use/privacy section. Pretty boring if you ask me!

All in all Amazon scored big with their first release of an app. I can only hope they continually improve and make the app faster while adding features. Hopefully the Remember feature is improved upon as well. What do you think about this app? Is it better than the web app? Here is a video review to go a long with the article, enjoy.
