Jailbreakers: Record and Upload LIVE Video from your iPhone with Qik

August 17, 2008 by Erik MacKinnon · Leave a Comment

It’s no secret that for some reason – which us Joe Q. Publics won’t hear about due to the developer-stifling NDA – that there has been a strange absence of video recording applications on the iPhone App Store. Before the iPhone 3G, video recording functionality has long been accessible to jailbreakers through DreamCatcher’s iPhone Video Recorder. Since the 2.0 firmware though, video recording has been absent. Until now! Read on to hear about Qik.com and their amazing live video streaming client for the iPhone.

Have You Played Cannon Challenge?

Who likes free games? Who likes free games on their iPhone? Who….. just kidding. Alright for this review we’re going to take it to the fun side of the iPhone. Many, many, many, did I say many, people love to play games on whatever device it may be. Heck, even us men as young boys could play any game with anything. One of my favorite was to take a rock and throw it at anything. My friends and I usually chose a trashcan or maybe a light pole. One of the best games ever. Now for you girls you might have chosen a game such as house? By the way I love that TV show, House, so good. But we were talking about iPhone games so let’s get back on track.

MobileChat: A Lesson in Using Paying Customers to Alpha Test

August 16, 2008 by Erik MacKinnon · Leave a Comment

A few days ago, we posted a quick article about the brand spanking new (and purportedly first fully-featured) iPhone instant messenger client MobileChat. The idea was to provide you, dear reader, with a review of the functionality of MobileChat and how awesome finally having an IM client that can connect to multiple networks at once would be.

Unfortunately for us – and especially for developer twenty08 – the launch of MobileChat has been somewhat of an epic disaster and a true lesson on why alpha/beta testing and planning are a part of the software development process.

The App Store Is On Fire

This is what all of the iPhone 3G craze is really all about. Yeah 3G speed is nice, and Exchange will start making great headways into the corporate world. But really this is what people have been yearning for since the mention of the iPhone. We knew the iPhone would run a variant of OS X, and in turn that meant the iPhone could run applications just like our Macs could. Sadly enough the first iPhone was released with what seems like now little kiddy apps. Calendar, weather, stocks, notes…. UGH boring! At the time though those apps were all we had. I loved checking the weather, playing with the timer, and adding numbers in calculater. Don’t get me wrong though YouTube and Google Maps were some awesome applications that were on the original iPhone, but it came to a time to let the Mac developers have their chance at the iPhone software.

Sync Notes, Photos With Evernote For iPhone

August 15, 2008 by Derek Walter · Leave a Comment

It’s hard enough to stick to a to-do list. It’s even harder to keep track of where the list is if you are using one or more computers, an iPhone, and notepad. Evernote wants to solve that. While it still has some flaws, Evernote is a great app to move note-taking and organization into the cloud. Being able to compose and view the same set of notes on your iPhone, PC, and Mac is an incredible tool and will make keeping track of all those items you are likely to forget much easier.

Not In Beijing? Use Your iPhone!

The Olympics started way back, five whole days ago on the 8th of August, 8.8.08. Since then I really haven’t kept track of the competitions. I caught some mens volleyball, the womens bike race, and barely some of the mens swimming. I just so happened to miss the mens 400m!! I knew the French swimmers were saying they were to crush the US, but I didn’t watch it to see what happened! UGHH! Have you been keeping up with the olympics. To do so you have to stay glued to your TV for 24 hours. This is quite impossible for me as I have to work, eat, shower, and live my life away from the TV. So how in the world am I going to keep track of the Olympics? Well I will tell you how and yes it involves your iPhone, thank the Lord!

Despite the lip syncing, computer generated fireworks, BSOD’s, and fake birth certificates, I still want to see what country and who is winning what at the Olympics. Thankfully I bought an iPhone on July 11th, not knowing this would help me keep up with the Olympic games. With that said I have three wonderful ways to track the Olympics from your iPhone. Two are apps in the app store, and one is a web app. Now let me show you how we’re going to keep track of all the gold medal winners.

Best Buy Set to Become the USA’s First Independent iPhone Retailer

August 13, 2008 by Erik MacKinnon · 1 Comment

September 7th is the date – Best Buy has confirmed that it will launch the Apple iPhone 3G to 986 of its stores. Here’s the official press release (thanks to the AP)

“We had a lot of work to do, obviously, to get in a position where Apple and AT&T would feel good about Best Buy Mobile carrying it, and that’s what we’ve done in the last 18 months,” said Shawn Score, president of Best Buy Mobile.

Best Buy also resells Apple’s Mac computers and iPod media players. Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said the long-standing relationship between the companies was the reason Best Buy would now be able to sell the iPhone.

MobileChat: The Ups and Downs of Launch Day

August 13, 2008 by Erik MacKinnon · 1 Comment

Twenty08’s MobileChat – the newest somewhat full featured IM application to hit the App Store – dropped today, and initial response was good. So good, in fact, that the initial blast of users was enough to completely annihilate Twenty08’s server farm and drop the entire service.

From Twenty08’s official blog:

This is great news for our users and TERRIBLE news for us. While we’re excited that it’s on AppStore. We had no idea that the push behind MobileChat was so big! Our server load is going through the roof as I write this email and we’re quickly beginning to feel the heat.

Improve Battery Life – 3 iPhone Battery Extensions Reviewed

August 12, 2008 by Ryan Ray · 3 Comments

The love of the iPhone 3G is immense, that is if you put aside one glaring issue… BATTERY LIFE!! GPS is great to have. It’s saved my tail many of times from becoming lost. Even this very weekend I used my iPhone’s GPS to get us around Indiana. If you weren’t aware I played in a band for a charity event in Indiana, and I live in Missouri. I used the GPS to find food, to find guitar strings, and even to give my friends directions via twittelator. Besides GPS the 3G network speed is wonderful. It’s so easy to surf the web or download email, even many of the apps I use load much faster now as the data they require zips over 3G. But what do you get for using all of these feautures? That’s right, battery life gets sucked down the drain. Almost as quick as you can say, “WTF, how come my iPhone is about to die?!”

Apple Sued by Patent Troll for Allegedly Violating up to Ten Patents with the iPhone

August 11, 2008 by Erik MacKinnon · 2 Comments

Apple – the makers of our beloved iPhone – along with Palm and Blackberry maker Research in Motion were sued late last month in the Eastern District of Virginia court. The plaintiff, WiAV Solutions, alleges that Apple et al are in violation of at least 10 patents related to GSM mobile communication technology and AMR voice compression technology.

WiAV is no stranger to recklessly suing companies in the hopes of winning injunctions and damages. A company with no headquarters, no website and no products outside of patent lawsuits, WiAV has turned up on the radar before for similar suits. A quick Google search shows that WiAV has previously threatened patent enforcement litigation on Texas-based American Microsystems (see update below), a manufacturer of handheld wireless barcode scanners.
